Lily the capybara, pictured right, gave birth to an adorable pup, pictured left,  at Chester Zoo that could grow up to be five feet long

Lily the capybara welcomed her pup, pictured, last Friday and it was quickly up on its feet

Capybara are often referred to as giant guinea pigs and can grow to up to five feet in length

Capybara are the largest of the world’s rodent species and eat their own dung to extract the maximum nutritional value from food

Lily's pup, pictured left, took its first swim shortly after being born in front of a crowd of onlookers at Chester Zoo

Capybara are found living in small herds on grasslands, in tropical forests and on wetlands across much of South America where they spend much of their time in water

The scientific name of the capybara means ‘water pig’ and their bodies have been specially adapted for swimming

Capybara have webbed feet and their eyes, ears and nostrils located on top of their heads

Although not currently listed as an endangered species, the capybara is threatened by illegal poaching

The capybara is hunted by poachers for its meat and skin, which can be turned into leather

Keepers at Chester Zoo hope that Lily’s new arrival will help to bring some attention to the species

The adorable capybara pup attracted a crowd of onlookers after being born at Chester Zoo in Cheshire last Friday

The eyes and nostrils of capybara are on the tops of their heads so they can stay submerged with very little of their body showing - it helps them to avoid predators

The pup's sex is not immediately obvious at birth and it will need to be determined by zookeepers
