أصدر علماء تابعون لجامعة كوفنتري البريطانية قائمة بالبراكين التي تعد انفجاراتها خطرا حقيقيا على الآلاف ممن يعيشون بالقرب منها.

وأكد عالم الجيولوجيا، ماثيو بليكيت، المشرف على مشروع دراسة البراكين في الجامعة أن “الدراسات التي قاموا بها بينت أن أكثر البراكين قد تشكل خطورة على سطح كوكبنا هي، بركان فيزوف في إيطاليا، وبركان نيراجونجو في جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، بركان بوبوكاتيبيتل في المكسيك، وبركان كراكاتوا الإندونيسي وبركان بايكدو في كوريا الشمالية”.

وأشار عالم الجيولوجي الى أن البراكين تعد أحد أخطر الظواهر الطبيعية الموجودة على سطح الأرض، فانفجاراتها تسببت منذ العام 1600 بمقتل ما يزيد على 280 ألف شخص.
