انتشر آلاف من عناصر الجيش السريلانكى، الاثنين، لتأمين المساعدات لقرابة نصف مليون شخص اضطروا للنزوح بسبب أسوأ فيضانات تشهدها البلاد منذ اكثر من عقد واسفرت عن مقتل 177 شخصا.

وارتفعت حصيلة الضحايا إلى 177 قتيلا الاثنين بعدما انتشل الجنود جثثا من تحت الوحول التى تسبب بها انهيار تربة فى راتنابورا، وأعلن مركز ادارة الكوارث ان 109 أشخاص لا يزالون مفقودين، وكان المركز أشار فى حصيلة سابقة إلى مقتل 169 شخصا، وأعلن الجيش ان توقف الامطار الغزيرة لفترة وجيزة اتاح نشر مروحيات وسفن وعناصر على الارض لاجلاء السكان من المناطق المنكوبة وايصال المساعدات الغذائية واحتياجات أولية اخرى.

 تسببت الامطار الغزيرة الجمعة بحصول فيضانات وانزلاقات تربة فى هذه الجزيرة الواقعة على المحيط الهندى ما ارغم حوالى نصف مليون شخص فى جنوب وغرب البلاد على مغادرة منازلهم، وتشهد سريلانكا فيضانات بشكل منتظم مع بدء الامطار الموسمية السنوية. لكن جاى. اتش سيريبالا الذى كان يقيم فى احد المناطق الاكثر تضررا قال انه لم يشهد فيضانات مماثلة فى السابق.

وقامت السلطات بإجلاء 230 ألف شخص من منازلهم في جنوب وغرب البلاد التي تضررت بالأمطار الموسمية.

وقام الجيش بعمليات بحث في المناطق التي شهدت انهيارات أرضية. وأرسل خمس طائرات لعمليات الإنقاذ وخمسا أخرى لنقل مواد الإغاثة العاجلة إلى القرويين العالقين في مناطقهم ولا يمكن الوصول إليهم من طريق البر.

وأكد وزير الداخلية السريلانكي فاجيرا أبيواردينا أن الأمطار الأكثر غزارة انتهت لكن هناك خطر حدوث فيضانات. ودعا السكان إلى مغادرة الأراضي المنخفضة واللجوء إلى المرتفعات الأقل تأثرا.

وقال أبيواردينا للصحافيين في كولومبو “ما زال لا يمكن الوصول إلى عدد كبير من المناطق”. وأضاف “هناك بعض القطاعات التي لا يمكن الوصول إليها حتى بالمروحيات والسفن”.

وأضاف أن الحكومة ألقت من الجو عشرة آلاف سترة إنقاذ للأشخاص العالقين وأعدت 104 مآو في مبان عامة للذين يتم إجلاؤهم.

ووصلت سفينة هندية السبت إلى كولومبو لتقديم المساعدة لسريلانكا. وهي تقل طاقما طبيا للإنقاذ وزوارق مطاطية وأدوية. ويفترض أن تصل سفينة ثانية الاثنين.

وقالت إدارة الأرصاد الجوية إنها تتوقع تراجعا في غزارة الأمطار.

وهذه الأمطار الموسمية التي كانت متوقعة مساء الخميس، أنهت موجة جفاف كانت تهدد القطاع الزراعي وكذلك إنتاج الطاقة في البلاد.
