This image shows St Louis Levee in 1852 and was taken by Thomas M Easterly - before the destruction of the civil war  

This image features the Aqueduct Bridge over the Potomac River in Georgetown, DC, taken between 1863 and 1865 during the Civil War and shows how the area was still very undeveloped - despite having been founded more than 100 years earlier

This photograph features the Steamer Princess taken by Jay Dearborn Edwards in 1858 or 1859 in New Orleans. Shortly after this image was taken, the Princess exploded after leaving Baton Rouge with a cargo of passengers and cotton 

George Barker traveled to Niagra Falls in 1886 with his camera where he captured the tremendous power of the falling water

Some of the images, such as this view of Niagra Falls have barely changed over the past few generations 

This image of the Loring Estate at Prides Crossing, Beverly Massachusetts was taken between 1857-1859 by Samuel Masury

Some of the images feature the beginnings of industrialization in the Untied States with his mining operation  from 1863-65

John Moran captured this image of Broadheads Creek in Delaware Water Gap in 1863 and forms part of an exhibition running over the summer featuring photographs from the eastern states of the United States taken in the mid 19th century 

The collection shows how the landscape was changed, such as by the Atlantic and Great Western Railway in 1862 to improve transport links between the states and encourage trade although building the railroad during the civil war was difficult

This image, captured by Seneca Ray Stoddard was taken in the Drowned lands of the lower Raquette, Adirondacks, Glens Falls, New York in 1888. It is one of the 175 photographs which will feature in this summer's travelling exhibition 

The Drowned Lands look completely different from an aircraft - which was not available to Seneca Ray Stoddard in 1888

The Morris Canal, pictured  crossed underneath the Lehigh Valley Railroad in New Jersey taken in 1895 by William Rau

In building this collection, Diane Waggoner, the exhibition's curator, brought in photography formats such as stereographs

This 1885 image taken by Henry Hamilton Bennet shows a small paddle steamer approaching Wisconsin Dells

The Wisconsin Dells, pictured, are still a popular holiday destination for watersports enthusiasts 

The exhibition  will run through July 16 in Washington before moving on to New Orleans later in the year

Samuel A Bemis took this photograph of Crawford Notch and Hotel, White Mountains in New Hampshire between 1840-42

According to Waggoner, the exhibition is unusual because many collections of the time concentrated on the Wild West
